Hi, I have enjoyed reading everyone’s stories so far. I can relate to each and every one. My story is that I started playing the pokies when I was barely legally old enough to do so. I didn’t know what I was doing, but I enjoyed getting the $1 coins from the machine when I knew I had made a couple dollars. My first win was $33 and I was over the moon! Free money, right? well fast forward a couple years and I that $33 was nothing. I am now 30 and have continued to play the pokies, upping the bets so I could “win” more. What a lie that was. The more I bet, the more I lose. Today, I only play max bets or close to it. I’ve lost so much money over the years it hurts to think about it so I try not to. I wish I could turn back time and never touch them. How different my life would be. I want to give up so bad, but I always find myself back there when I get money. I can’t afford to play, but I go anyway hoping for a win. It’s quite sad. I have tried counselling and self exclusion, but there are so many places to go and gamble I feel that the want to quit should come from within. Anyway that’s my story for today. I wish anyone trying to beat this horrid addiction does so as soon as possible. It’s never too late to turn your life around. I will start my abstinence tomorrow and try to be strong.

Dear Maryanne,

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I’m so glad that you’ve reached out as I can imagine there are many people who can relate to your situation. It is normal for people to try and stop gambling a number of times before they are successful. If it was easy, then gambling wouldn’t have such a devastating impact! I can hear that although you have had slip ups along the way, you are incredibly motivated to change. It sounds like you have tried counselling and self-exclusion, and I’m wondering whether you feel seeing a different counsellor would be helpful for you? Alternatively, you might like to check out the Gambling Help Site and look at the Self-Help-Booklet that can be used to help control you’re gambling. http://www.gamblinghelp.nsw.gov.au/wp-content/uploads/Self-Help-Booklet-Web5.pdf

There are some fantastic resources available on the gambling help website, which you might also like to explore.

I wish you all the best in your journey.

Kind regards,

Counsellor Sam
