What is the Gambling Help Forum?

The Gambling Help forums are a safe space where you can talk with others who are concerned about their own gambling or that of their partners, friends of family. These forums are a place where you can anonymously share your experiences, thoughts and feelings, in a safe and supportive environment.

Gambling Help is funded by the Responsible Gambling Fund, within the NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing, to assist those affected by problem gambling.

How do the forums work?

The forums are divided into three categories – an administrative section (Welcome to the Gambling Help Forum), a section for overcoming problem gambling, and a section for family and friends. Each category contains many sub-forums, for example, ‘Overcoming Problem Gambling’ contains sub-forums such as ‘Relationships’, ‘Filling the void’, and ‘Inspiration & Insights’. Within these sub-forums you can create topics for discussion, or read or post replies within topics.

Can I change my username?

You cannot change your username (the name that you chose when you signed up to the Forum and that you use to log in), however you can change your display name, which is what others will see on the forums. This can be changed through the ‘Profile’ panel.

What is an avatar and how do I upload one?

An avatar is a small image used to represent you on our forums. We encourage you to maintain your anonymity on the forums, and recommend using an image that does not identify you.

You can upload an avatar in the ‘Profile’ panel under ‘Edit Avatar’. There is a maximum file size and maximum width (50 pixels x 50 pixels) – you may need to use a picture editor program to resize your image before you can upload.

If you have a Gravatar account, and you have signed up to the forums with the email address associated with that account, this avatar will be displayed.

What is the difference between a ‘topic’ and a ‘post’?

A ‘topic’ or ‘thread’ is a subject that is for discussion within a particular forum, and there can be many topics in a forum. Within these topics, members are able to read and reply or ‘post’ their contribution to the discussion, or they can start their own topic for a new discussion.

To help members understand what a particular topic or thread is about, it is important that the subject of the topic is clear and descriptive.

Remember that this is a public forum, and all posts can be read by other members as well as guests/the general public.

Creating a new topic/thread

To create a new topic/thread, you need to be logged in. You can start a new discussion by clicking the ‘Add Topic’ button (which appears at the top of every forum page) in the relevant sub-forum. You can then enter your topic title and message, and submit.

Why is a topic/thread’s title so important?

The topic/thread title is what other members will see when they are browsing the forums, and the title is what will guide the discussion within the thread. If you are asking a question, it is helpful to use that question as your topic title.

A descriptive title clearly explains what the topic is about to other members; non-specific threads may be ignored by other members in favour of more specific thread titles.

Adding an emoticon to a message

Emoticons, or ‘Smileys’, can be used in your conversations on the forums. Click the smileys you wish to include in your message – these will show up as words (i.e. : yell :, : frown :, : smile :, etc) in the text editor, but once you submit your reply, they will display as emoticons.

Why aren’t my posts showing up? Why don’t my posts appear straight away?

To protect the safety of our members, particularly from distressing or abusive content, all posts are moderated to check for potential breaches of our Community Guidelines, Member Terms, or Terms of Use. Once posts have been approved and published, these are visible publicly to everyone reading the forum, whether you are logged in as a member or not.

Reporting Abuse – what/when/how/why?

To protect the safety of our members, posts are moderated to check for potential breaches of our Community Guidelines, Member Terms, or Terms of Use. Once posts have been approved and published, they are visible publicly to everyone reading the forum, whether logged in as a member or not. If you feel that a post has slipped through and forum rules have been breached or you are concerned about content of a post or behaviour of a member, we encourage you to use the ‘Report’ function. You will be asked to enter a comment and the details of the post will then be sent through to the Gambling Help Admin for action. We appreciate the assistance of our members bringing anything of concern to our attention, no matter how small you might think it is.

What is a ‘sticky’ and how do I create one?

A ‘sticky’ or ‘pinned’ thread is one which has been pinned to the top of the forum so that it does not get lost as other topics are posted. It might be an important announcement from the Gambling Help Forum team, or a thread that contains posts from members that could be very helpful to our online community.

A thread can only be pinned by the Gambling Help Admin. If there is a particular thread that you think is useful and should be pinned, please contact us.
