Hi
I am a friend of a gambling man who recently became destitute because of gambling.
He has a story but I am angry that the club in his local community knew his circumstances re recent redundacy payout and his frequencing of gambling sessions to their establisgment.
Why arent they required to intervene as they were aware of his ever increasing gambling sessions
I know they have a legal requirement to be vigilant around self banning from their establishment but isnt that a bit too late

Hi Babs,

Thanks for your post - it sounds like you are very upset at the situation your friend found himself in, especially, as you said, because the club was aware of his vulnerability. It is very hard to watch those around us who are struggling with gambling addiction and it sounds like you're a great support to your friend.

There are a couple of things that might be helpful - one is that you can contact the Office of Liquor and Gaming to discuss your concerns - their number is 02 9995 0300 (Monday to Friday 9:00am to 4:00pm). Alternatively you could contact Clubs NSW on 02 9268 3000 and give them feedback about what your friend experienced.

In terms of supporting your friend, if you could encourage him to contact the Gambling Helpline on 1800 858 858, he can talk to a counsellor who can refer him to a face to face counsellor, or financial counsellor who can help make his financial situation a bit more secure. The good news is that there is a lot of support available for him, and for yourself if you would like it. Often people find that once they get linked in with professional help, they can start to take back control of their gambling. Do you think your friend would be interested in this? Alternatively you can encourage him to look at this website and some of the real stories on the forum - he might be able to get some ideas from there.

Hope this has been helpful Babs and please do let us know if there is anything else you would like help with.

all the best,

Counsellor Sam

Thanks Sam
I didn't really expect a reply so I am grateful you did
Thank you for the contact information .
I may phone them but I expect little as I am a third party and my friend doesnt want to discuss the situation.
This was the place I accessed to put him in contact with a local gambling counselor. Who provuded him with further contacts to a financial advisor who has assisted him through his dire circumstaces resulting him in being able to access his superannuation to keep a roof over his head and a budget that provides a very basic standard of living.
So I am indeed very grateful that this website is here and I could get help for him. There is still concerns re his being able to get income from Centrelink as they have figured he wont be entitled to any support till early November but his superannuation will not last till then.
He is continuing his best to get employment but has not had much luck. I am desparate to get help from Centrelink and the job providers .
The good news is he had stayed away from the club and gambling

Hi Babs,

That is great to hear! Often the financial counselling can be very helpful in crisis situations like this - it sounds like your friend is on his way to getting back on his feet financially. Hopefully he can also benefit from talking to a gambling counsellor and finding ways to stay away from gambling for good.
Please don't hesitate to call up the Helpline or post on this forum if you have any other questions or would like some support for yourself or your friend.

all the best,

Counsellor Sam
